Olivier Messiaen's Eclairs sur l'Au-Dela (Illuminations of the Beyond) was commissioned in 1987 by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. It is a vast work, written for a 128-piece orchestra (including ten each of flutes and clarinets and a veritable platoon of percussion instruments) and cast in 11 movements collectively lasting over an hour. The titles of the individual movements, with one exception, are taken from the book of Revelations, and collectively represent the Messiaen's reflections on what awaits a soul passing from this world to the next. The work represents a celebration and a synthesis of all the musics Messiaen loved to write: music of the stars, music praising God, and bird song, to name but three.
