'SPRACHMUSIK, 4-channel lecture-performance, 2012-17
a Concept, for Reading Aloud About Listening / an Ode to Sound
Electro-acoustic composition by berlin based fine artist Stefan Roigk. the radio play like combination of poetic lectures, vocals treatments, concrete sounds and deep vocal drones is based on several live recordings an performances made between 2012 and 2015.
The concept of SPRACHMUSIK begins with a series of poetic lectures that feature detailed and very subjective descriptions of sounds, background noises and musical structures. Between text segments, Roigk adds short vocal improvisations to the fixed text. He feeds these improvisations into an 8-channel Max/MSP patch, which arranges fragments the recordings and randomly modulates their pitch, direction and destiny, creating an abstract atmosphere similar to that of a radio drama. The project emphasizes the difficulties of accurately describing sound with words—a difficulty that arises from each individual's deeply subjective perceptions and experiences of sound.
